Introduction to Youth as Trustees

This curriculum focuses on helping youth understand trusteeship, the action involved, and the commitment needed.  Its purpose is to empower youth to serve as trustees and to demonstrate this belief through community service.  Sections in the curriculum include:

History: Instilling a life-long commitment to service by understanding its history and how youth have contributed to that history

  • Who me a Trustee?

  • Young adults in history books

  • Getting a line on your line -- a timeline activity

  • The meaning of trust

Future:  Envisioning an ideal community and acquiring the skills needed to bring vision to reality

  • Consensus building

  • Brainstorming

  • Listening

  • Team building

  • Understanding differences

  • Community walkabout/talkabout

  • Envisioning your community

  • Community needs assessment

The role of a board member:   Acquiring the interpersonal/group process skills needed to serve

  • Issues consensus

  • Board member code of ethics

  • Do you hear what I see?

  • Building blocks to leadership

Mission:  developing a personal mission and using this knowledge to select meaningful community involvement

  • Youth personal mission

  • Time management

  • Action planning model

The curriculum comes with an instructor's guide and a trusteeship journal.

Instructor's Guide:  Accompanying the curricula is an instructor's guide which provides:

  • Training and facilitating skills

  • Sample agendas

  • Processing skills

  • Evaluation forms

  • Training checklist and planning forms

  • Developmental needs of young adolescents

  • The philosophy of trusteeship vs. leadership
