Introduction to Youth 
in Governance

This curriculum centers around the administrative functions and day-to-day workings of a board of directors.  Its purpose is to encourage the participation of youth on boards and/or committees and to provide the knowledge needed to be an effective board/committee member.  Sections in the curriculum include:

The art of trusteeship: Board service and the common good

  • Holding in trust

  • Getting to the heart of the matter

  • Moving toward your mission

The role of a board member:   Acquiring the technical skills needed to serve

  • You're out of order/gavel relay

  • Understanding finances or dollars make sense

  • Fund raising as fun-raising for the board

  • Board simulation role play

The role of a board member:   Acquiring the interpersonal/group process skills needed to serve

  • Issues consensus

  • Board member code of ethics

  • Do you hear what I see?

  • Building blocks to leadership

After the training:  Providing the opportunities for service

  • Providing the opportunities to serve

  • Providing access to youth for board or committee assignments

  • Search for a permanent home

  • Development of a youth skills bank

The curriculum comes with an instructor's guide and a sample board manual.
